Purpose of the program
The Post-Baccalaureate Program in Gender and Global Issues at the University of California, Davis, is designed for students who already have a B.A./B.S. but seek additional training in order to strengthen their preparation for graduate school or for the workplace.
Our Program merges academic knowledge with practical professional development and allows participants to gain a competitive edge for positions in areas where issues of gender competency and global awareness have growing significance. This uniquely flexible and wide-ranging field of study covers topics from the arts to agriculture to human rights from a feminist perspective. Questions of gender equity constitute the primary focus of this program and provide tools for assessment and action applicable in the US and abroad. Post-bac study offers students the opportunity to gain experience in graduate study at a major research university while also allowing flexibility in time scheduling.

Course of Study
Student Qualifications
Applicants are expected to have a minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Science
degree and not be currently enrolled in other UCD programs. A TOEFL score
of 550 or better is required for non-native English speakers. Applicants must
submit an application form with a statement of purpose and official transcripts
in English.
Certificate Requirements
This is a flexible program in order to allow students to take gender courses
that most closely fit their needs and interests. We have provided a list
of courses to help students start choosing classes. Students may also
choose to incorporate additional technical courses that build their professional
expertise. A faculty advisor assigned to work with the student must approve
the course plan.
If a student has not had any previous gender courses, s/he will need to take the WMS 50, "Introductory Women and Gender Studies" as a prerequisite for the other courses in the series. A required course for all certificate students is WMS 182 "Global Gender and Identity". There will be a Capstone two unit Group Study WMS 298/9 offered specifically for certificate students, in which students will complete an independent project.
Award of certificate requires a minimum of 18 credit units of upper-division undergraduate or graduate level courses. A minimum of 12 of these units must be formal course work. Group Study 198 or 298 and Independent Research 199 or 299 are not considered formal course work. Although students could finish the program in two quarters, they are allowed to complete the requirements at their own pace.
Students must earn passing grades (cumulative 3.0 GPA, B average) in their
coursework and a "satisfactory" evaluation from their faculty mentor to complete
the program.
